About Rotherham

This town was formerly a Saxon market town which remained largely unaltered until the Industrial Revolution. It had been held by the Saxon's and later the manor was given by William the Conqueror to his half brother the Earl of Mortain.

The centre of Rotherham has recently undergone a program of refurbishment making it a now a place of enormous appeal to visitors from far and wide. Its handsome church dominates an attractive town centre. All Saints is a magnificent church from the 15th century built on the site of an earlier church, possibly of around 937AD. It has impressive stained glass windows and a wealth of treasures collected over the centuries and has been described by Pevsner as " the finest Perpendicular church in the country" doubtless few would refute such a claim.

Joshua Walker and his family were instrumental in the 19th century development of the town, just five minutes from the town centre visitors can find Clifton Park a magnificent estate surrounding Clifton Park Museum, once the home of the Walker family. In this beautifully preserved late 18th century house there are collections of pottery, glass, paintings and many other artefacts. The earth centre is all absorbing, this covers 26 acres of stunning parkland and offers outdoor activities.

Other interesting visits in Rotherham include the Rotherham Arts Centre which also incorporates the Rotherham Gallery, this shows rich displays of photographic art and paintings. It also offers a range of changing exhibitions throughout the year.

With up to date shopping, and leisure facilities second to none, Rotherham with all this plus its close proximity to picturesque market town's and the old city of Sheffield is guaranteed to give each and every tourist a memorable time.
